Yes there are hard wooden parts and they could be dangerous if you let your child run with the screw driver, or any toy I’d guess for that matter… However, I specifically look for Melissa and Doug toys now. I have two toddlers, one year apart. They love each of this particular brand of toys. They are durable, educational and have assisted in fine and gross motor development of my youngest, who is a little behind. The therapists always mention that they want the toys when I get rid of them. However, I haven’t been able to get rid of any yet. They play with them all the time. I have the “black & decker” plastic tool kit too, which has small nuts and bolts that I removed immediately as the nuts on that kit are definately a choaking hazard. I bought both last holiday. Both of my toddlers, for some reason, always reach for this one first over the other… I wouldn’t have guessed that. I don’t know why that is… The other kit has so many real looking parts.
These parts are more durable. The nails when hammered are difficult to remove, but I showed my child how to use the rear of the hammer to jolt or pry the nail out, as one would use a regular hammer… It hasn’t posed a problem since.
I have so many great things to say about Melissa & Doug toys. I specifically look for them first and I have a difficult time buying anything else, of like or kind, if given the opportunity. Even if the savings is substantial.

Besides being one of my son’s favorite toys, I feel great about him playing with it all the time because he is building on his fine motor skills. Also, it is adorable to watch him follow his father around the house when his father fixes things. Cleap up is made easy by the tool box that comes with it – and this toy is holding up unbelivablly well considering how quickly my son’s toys normally break!

i bought this for my son who is a month shy of 2 & enjoys bob the builder & my tools. even though he is not the recommened age, i thought he might begin investigating it & trying it out if it was around. the more he plays with it, the better he gets at learning to use the tools. he has loads of fun with daddy (or me) while they screw together the plates & hammer in the pegs. my son is thrilled that he has his own tools, so he now leaves mine alone. this is a wooden toy that will swell or shrink with humidity, so there are some days getting the pegs out is just a bit stickier. but in general we have no problem with them. a simple pull & twist or using the claw on the hammer works. because we play with him with this toy, he is supervised, but i can see how a child might get injured. my son goes from toy to toy every 10-15 mins, so i don’t expect him to be captivated by anything, but he does play with this a bit longer than others. it challenges him to experiment & is a great toy for us to use to play with him. he watches what we do & then tries to mimic us. he has learned on his own that he can put the screws into the holes, which are slightly larger than the screws, then use the screwdriver to turn them. i like it for it’s old time toolkit design & because all the pieces fit inside. keep in mind the child’s personality, temperment, type of play – supervised vs. unsupervised – & the likes of the child. my son, for the moment, enjoys this toolkit. when he’s a little older that may change. i’ll find out. i have bought a few toys i was certain he’d love, but hasn’t touched since they day i brought them home, but this one’s a keeper.

Not a whole lot to say except that what you see is what you get. It’s well put together, which I’ve found is always the case with this brand. My daughter is on the young side of the age range for this product, so I’ve been controlling her access to the toy screwdriver — a little pointy — but that’s not a flaw in the product by any means.

Durable and realistic with lots of tools and places on the tool box to use them. Self contained, colorful and great for hand eye coordination.

My grandson is only 9 months old and already loves anything to do with tools. At this age, he can only play with his tools while under supervision, but already these are his favorites! The tools are very well made and durable, and we expect him to have these for years to come.

I bought 2 of this for 2 3-yr-olds at my son’s daycare. They happened to be Bob the Builder fans and really loved this toolset!
